Project Description

Impacting the Diocese of Beaumont for more than 40 years

By Mallory Matt

A kind and loving smile welcomed the camera crew into the foyer of St. Mark the Evangelist in Silsbee. The retired Msgr. James Vanderholt slowly walked into the church with his hand anchoring his achy back.

“I’m sorry, I need to sit,” he said. “I can’t stand for long.”

He took a seat on a chair set in the middle of the aisle especially for him as the cameraman set up for the interview. On came the bright lights.

“Oh!” he said, stunned by the brightness. “It feels like I’m having an apparition.”
Although time has taken his stride and his hair, it hasn’t taken his humor.

Msgr. Vanderholt is just one of the many who has seen the Diocese of Beaumont grow over the past half century. His interview was caught on video as many others will be as the diocese’s birthday draws nearer.

Be on the lookout for more interviews caught on video on the diocesan website, www.dioceseofbmt.org or the Catholic Diocese of Beaumont Facebook page, as well as on the Diocese of Beaumont YouTube channel. These video interviews are a series of different Southeast Texans’ perspectives and stories about the Diocese of Beaumont in honor of the 50th birthday celebration to be held Sept. 18 at Ford Park.
