By Carol Glatz Catholic News Service VATICAN CITY (CNS) — By reflecting on the Passion of Christ, the author of the Way of the Cross meditations for Pope Francis’ Good Friday service said he will focus on the suffering unfolding in the world today and how “the martyrs of the 21st century are undoubtedly the apostles of today.” Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti of Perugia-Citta della Pieve told Vatican Radio that his reflections on the traditional 14 stations will blend in “references to the present day, which unfortunately is not lacking in crosses” people are forced to bear.

More than 500 youth from 26 parishes across the Diocese of Beaumont participated in Youth 2000 Feb. 19-21. The retreat was held at St. Anne in Beaumont and hosted by Franciscan friars. The youth participated in the celebration of Mass, prayer, small groups and talks with a main focus Saturday night with adoration.
By Cindy Wooden Catholic News Service ABOARD THE PAPAL FLIGHT FROM MEXICO (CNS) — With physicians across Central and South American urging women to postpone pregnancy because of the Zika virus that causes birth defects, Pope Francis said using contraceptives could be a “lesser evil.” Holding a news conference Feb. 17 on his way back to Rome after a six-day visit to Cuba and Mexico, the pope was asked if the use of artificial contraceptives or abortion could be considered “a lesser evil” when the baby had a high risk of birth defects.
More than 60 parishioners from across Southeast Texas gathered at St. Therese, the Little Flower of Jesus, in Port Arthur for the Southern Vicariate Pizza and Pointers. The Stewardship and Communications ministry used this as an opportunity to share ways of stewarding the time, talent and treasure from the attendees.
