Presenting the Bible as present day

Sister Carol Perry, SU, returned to the Diocese of Beaumont for the 18^th year to host “A Week with the Bible,” series June 13-16 at the Holy Family Retreat Center in Beaumont.

At her final workshop, “Faith is Meeting God Where We Are,” she explained the stories of the Bible and related them to the present day, such as a drop of purple dye costing $500, which is why purple became a symbol of wealth and royalty — because those were the only people who could afford purple cloth.

“She’s beautifully educated,” said Sandra Hathaway from St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Beaumont. “She is the most enlightening person.”

Hathaway, who has attended the workshops for the last five or six years, said Sister Perry has captivated her because “she makes the Bible a story.”

While there, Sister Perry also offered her newest book “Among Women” about the women of the Bible’s challenges, courage and faith for purchase. Ruthie Guidroz of St. Jude Thaddeus, Beaumont, took the opportunity to have her book autographed.

“I am so thankful to her for writing this book,” she said. “Sister Carol is such a wonderful person.”
