Chrism Mass celebrates priesthood, unity

“Today we celebrate the institution of the priesthood, the Eucharist and the sacraments to help us to minister to God’s people and his presence,” said Bishop Guillory, SVD, at the annual Chrism Mass celebrated March 27 at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica.

Catholics from all over the Diocese of Beaumont came together for the Mass—showing the unity of the local Church. The celebration was also special for priests who renewed their ordination vows, rededicating themselves to Christ and to their parishioners.

Bishop Guillory blessed the Oil of the Sick and the Oil of the Catechumens. He also blessed the Sacred Chrism, which is used in anointing in the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, holy orders and in the dedication of churches.

The oils are distributed to all of the parishes, missions, and the hospital and prison chaplains to be used throughout the year.
