Guadalupe pilgrimage makes way through Port Arthur

Parishioners took part in the Guadalupe pilgrimage Dec. 9 that started at St. Joseph Church in Port Arthur and made its way to Queen of Vietnam Church before ending with a Mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.

The five-mile procession included decorated trucks and trailers as well as folkloric dances that represent early praises to the Virgin Mary from the Mayan and Aztec cultures from Mexico.

Mass was celebrated and a theatrical presentation of the miracles were performed at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church to finish this part of the Marian feast. This annual event celebrating the Feast Day of St. Juan Diego takes place the Saturday before the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Dec. 12.

Devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe, a cornerstone of Mexican faith, began in 1531 when the Blessed Mother appeared to Juan Diego on the outskirts of Mexico City.
