Dates for diocesan summer camp announced
Summer Camp 2008

The Diocese of Beaumont Summer Camp is on the move. Three big changes are in the works for the 2008 program, and now is the time to register to be a part of it.
Brochures/registration forms are being distributed through Catholic schools and parish religious education programs in the diocese. For those who may not receive them, brochures are also available by contacting the Office of Youth Ministry. Regular registration is $300 through May 1, increasing to $325 after that date.
Forest Glen Christian Camp near Huntsville has been selected as the new location for camp. Its 286 acres of woods, water and recreation areas offer a setting for a week of fun and faith in a positive Christian environment. The facility also provides for some new activities and experiences to compliment the well-established camp program.
The camp is also moving earlier in the summer, and the larger facility is allowing for combining the normal two weeks of camp into one. Campers who will be entering grades 4 through 9 in the fall will all attend the same week of June 8-13. They will still be grouped in cabins by grade, and while some activities will be done all together many will continue to be done with younger and older campers in separate groups.
Some elements of the Forest Glen’s ropes course will be incorporated in the camp program, as will use of canoes and bumper boats on the camp’s large lake. The facility’s staff includes cooks, waterfront personnel and lifeguards, and guides trained in the use of the ropes course elements and other activities.
The diocesan staff of cabin counselors, CITs, and adult leaders will continue to plan and supervise the spiritual, social and recreational content of the camp program.
Both returning and new campers will likely be excited to know the camp facilities are air-conditioned, providing a little relief from the daily outside activities in the summer heat. Also new this year is an option for bus transportation from Beaumont to the camp on Sunday afternoon and back to Beaumont on Friday evening. The transportation option requires an additional fee.
The move from a limited facility with a set lease rate to a facility that offers more and charges a per-person fee means an increase in the cost of camp over last year. The diocesan camp remains, however, one of the least expensive options for a week of summer camp in the area.
Scholarships are available to assist those who are unable to afford the entire camp fee. An application for a scholarship is available by contacting the Office of Youth Ministry by email at youth@dioceseofbmt.org or by calling (409) 835-3972.
