Chrism Mass at Saint Anthony Cathedral Basilica
The Chrism Mass, which the Bishop concelebrates with the priests from throughout the diocese, is an expression of the fullness of his priesthood and of the close unity of the priests with him.During the Chrism Mass the Sacred Chrism and balsam, the Oil of the Sick and the Oil of Catechumens are presented to Bishop. The Sacred Chrism is consecrated by Bishop. The Oil of the Sick and the Oil of Catechumens are blessed by Bishop. At the end of Chrism Mass the oils are sent to all parishes, mission hospital and prison chaplains to be used throughout the year.The Sacred Chrism is used in anointing in the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Orders, and in the dedication of churches. The Oil of Catechumens is used for the elect to give them strength for their spiritual journey as they prepare to celebrate the sacraments of initiation.The Oil of the Sick offers strength to the sick during times of illness of mind and body. During the Chrism Mass the priests of the diocese are invited to renew their commitment to their priestly service.
