Balancing classes and extra curricular activities can be quite the challenge. For the valedictorian and salutatorian at Msgr. Kelly Catholic High School, Beaumont, it seems effortless.

Nitya Kumar and Rachel Gilmore, the valedictorian and salutatorian respectively are both involved in a number of extra curricular activities at Kelly.

Kumar has been involved in Anchor Club, the Spanish Club, as well as tennis and soccer. Gilmore has been a member the dance team, student council, mock trial and several plays through her years at Kelly.

Both students enjoyed being a part of as many clubs and organizations as they could.

“Participating in a lot of activities helps you relax and take a breather from classes. It’s really there to recharge you after going to class all day. Playing tennis after school really helped to get my mind off of school for a little bit so I could focus on homework later,” Kumar said.

The seniors said that the environment at Kelly was extremely beneficial in giving them the drive to do well academically.

“This school has such a welcoming community. You know everyone and all the teachers are so willing to help you with whatever you need. Everyone is involved in a lot of different things so you’ll always know someone in the organizations or clubs,” Gilmore said.

After graduation Kumar will be attending the University of Texas, Austin, and major in business and hopefully play tennis as well. Gilmore will be attending Yale, Connecticut, and majoring in pre-medicine as well as participating in the theater program.
