Many people know which saints to pray to for different causes, but not many know the life stories of the saints or what those saints have meant to the Catholic Church as a whole. Father Sinclair Oubre hopes to rectify that in regard to St. Paul.

St. Thomas High School, Houston, dean Jenny McCon-nell will speak on the life of St. Paul and his relationship to Christianity and Catholicism during a lecture at St. Paul Mission, Sabine Pass. McCon-nell also teaches a course in theology at St. Mary Seminary in Houston.

“What we’re hoping for is a nice celebration for the parish and the diocese and the ecumenical community of Sabine Pass. We’re inviting anyone who wants to come. This will be an excellent introduction to St. Paul,” Father Oubre said.

The lecture coincides with the feast of St. Peter and St. Paul and also with the 2,000th birthday of St. Paul, which is recognized by the church as June 29.

Father Oubre said that the day will start with a general introduction to St. Paul as a man followed by his influence on Christianity and the Catholic Church.

“I just want people to come out with a greater appreciation for St. Paul and who he is in the life of the church. We want to bring his birthday into focus and also focus on the gifts he has given us and what he’s given to the life of the Church,” Father Oubre said.

According to the book of Acts St. Paul’s conversion took place on the road to Damascus when he experienced a vision of the resurrected Jesus. Paul stated that he received the Gospel not from a man but from “the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

The Pauline epistles contain the earliest account of Christian doctrine and provide information on the life of the early Church.

The lecture will be June 28 at St. Paul Mission, Sabine Pass, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a break for lunch in the parish hall. For more information please call Father Oubre at (409) 985-8010.
